I booked Aank hotel during a conference at Kaist. The hotel has a policy of leaving all doors not just unlocked, but wide open, until someone checks in. I was told they do this to ventilate the rooms. I checked in at 9p.m. and was disturbed to learn that anyone could have entered my room at any time all day before I checked in. This seems dangerous in a country with a hidden camera problem. The front desk staff was totally unsympathetic to my concerns as a solo female traveler. The person in charge of monitoring the security camera footage also handles check-in, cleaning and inspecting rooms, etc., which means they are not able to keep a close eye on CCTV to ensure the rooms are kept safe. In the end, I decided to stay somewhere else.
The hotel overall has a seedier vibe than I expected from the reviews and price point. In terms of cleanliness, there was a used tissue left in my room, but I genuinely think this was an understandable oversight.
The set up of the room was also a little inconvenient - for example, I couldn't even find the bathroom light switch because it was hidden behind a door in another room. This is also a minor issue though.
Mostly, I'm disappointed with how Agoda handled this issue - with inaction. As a solo female traveler, I have learned that security issues are not taken seriously and that I need to tread with caution on this site.
For the record, this is the first time I've ever left a hotel like this. Generally, I'm very understanding and easy going, but had to listen to my instincts in this case.
Couples or groups may be fine here, but I don't recommend it for solo women or people from vulnerable groups.
